Designers: Save your eyes with f.lux


Designers, almost more than any other workers, punish their eyes by routinely working deadlines late into the night. f.lux is a small free program developed to help reduce eye-strain. Basically it warms up the colour temperature of your screen during the darker times of the day which tones down the glare of your monitor. We have been using it for several months now and can attest to the fact that it does help.

Affect on design work…

If you are working on a colour sensitive project, it is simple enough to temporarily disable it. just click the icon in the taskbar and tick the ‘Disable for one hour (for doing colour-sensitive work)’ option.

Helping you sleep…

As a side bonus, f.lux might fix your bad sleeping pattern. Blue light at night can inhibit the secretion of melatonin and cause insomnia. Ordinarily your monitor would exude more blue tones than yellow, but because f.lux warms the temperature to a more golden glow at night, you might just find it easier to sleep.

Other things you can do to help eye-strain…

  1. Buy a good quality monitor & set the refresh rate as high as it can go.
  2. Make a conscious effort to blink more. Staring at a screen seems to inhibit this basic human function and in turn dries out your eyes.
  3. Every 30 minutes, take 30 seconds to focus on something in the distance or close your eyes completely.
  4. If your eyes feel really dry, rather than using harsh eyedrops, try a good quality teargel to lubricate them.
